Sewing Machine Cover

I love Pinterest and while searching and pinning I ran across several pictures of sewing machine covers.  I loved them....it was just what I wanted.  Since I had just made the strip quilt for my granddaughter I decided to make a sewing machine cover using the strips.  I didn't really follow a pattern.  The first thing I did was measure my machine to decided how wide to make it.  Then the hunt for fabric started.

These are the fabrics I selected!  I am not sure who makes the fabric, it was before I started looking at that, but I am leaning to Riley Blake.  It seems like every time I love a fabric it has been Riley Blake!

I then cut, pieced the strip and quilted it along the strips.  I sewed ribbon on to the sides for closure and I got very adventursome, I put ric rac in the binding.  I did alright on it, but I learned alot from attempting it.  Hopefully next time it will be better!

I want to make a mat for my machine to set on.  Haven't started it yet since I am working on another quilt for a different granddaughter.  I have the material though!

I feel very greatful sitting in my house with only a little rain outside.  I pray the people out east will stay safe and warm with all the blizzard warnings outside.

My First Quilt

This is my first quilt in 15 years.  One of my goals for retirement is to make all my children and grandchildren a quilt..........maybe many quilts.  I had to start easy because I wasn't even sure  I could remember how to cut fabric.  Luckily enough after staring at the fabric and thinking to myself I need to square the fabric up, it started to come back to me.  I wanted to start a very simple quilt so I would be successful, I wanted to have fun.  I did!  I started with a strip quilt.  This is no big accomplishment and after completing the quilt and searching on Pinterest, I realize I didn't need to follow a pattern, but I did.  I used a very old book called "Sew Fast...Sew Fun...Sew Easy! The book is by Cindy Taylor Oates, Taylor Made Designs.  You can find it here.

I made the strip quilt hanging on the back of the book.

I first went to pick out fabric.

Oh what fun I had picking out package for my littlest granddaughter.  This picture was taken with my IPad 2 so it is not the best.  But I loved the fabric.  It was so much fun to work with.

Here is the completed quilt...............so cute!  I even did the unthinkable, I quilted it on my machine.  A first time ever for me.  Of course it was super simple, I just did straight stitching 1/4 inch from the seams.

The fabric on the back is my favorite.  Perfect for a growing princess!  Now I can't tell you the name of the fabric (I didn't know enough to check!) but I will from now on.

I have since learned that using a Jelly Roll would of accomplished what I did without all the cutting, but I look at it as a learning experience!  My strips were cut at 3 inches instead of the 2 1/2 that Jelly rolls measure.    I purchased 1/3 yd of each of 8 colors (used 3 times each), 1/2 yard for the binding and the backing and batting.  My finished quilt measured 42" x 60." It is the perfect lap size quilt and small enough to easily quilt.

It is a snow day here...........so a quilting I will go!

My Boomer Life

Welcome to my new blog. I'm 61 years old, I have a wonderful husband, 2 wonderful grown sons, 1 daughter-in-law,one significant other, three terrific grandchildren and one adorable granddog! I thought I would jump into the blogging sphere to share my thoughts as a boomer and retired woman. I have just recently retired and will be posting about some of my new found hobbies, quilting, cardmaking, & scrapbooking.  Travel is another subject I love, but don't get to travel all that much.  I did just get back from DisneyWorld!  It was a wonderful trip and I was lucky enough to be there when the new Fantasyland opened.  I even got to have lunch at the new "Be Our Guest Restaurant."  The food was beautiful, the food was excellent and in the Disney tradiiton, the service was spectacular!

This is the entrance to "Be Our Guest."  The restaurant is booked through April (and that was when I was there at the beginning of December!)  If you want to eat there, go for lunch.  Show up early!!!  Get in line about 10:45.  The line moves quickly and the restaurant is so worth the wait!

The Rose!

While waiting in line you are in this hall that has these knights lined up.  There are also stands with the digital menus for you to look at.  Tip:  Pick out what you want while you are waiting in line!  Once you have ordered they will give you an electronic rose.  Just go find a seat of your choosing from the three halls, the servers will bring your food to you buy the location on your electronic rose.  It is self serve for your beverages.  My lunch was wonderful.  The turkey sandwich is hand carved turkey!

This is the main hall.  I am not the best of photographers so please excuse the pic.  This room was huge and wonderful!  You can't see it, but there was snow falling outside the windows.

The Beauty and the Beast statue is the center of the second room.

This is the "Rose Room."  It is very dark with a large fireplace.  The Rose is absolutely beautiful.

On the way out is a beautiful stained class window of Beauty and the Beast.  Of course, you can stand by it and take pictures.

Stay tuned for more pics about my Christmas Disney trip and my first "basic" quilt I made for my younges granddaughter for Christmas!!!!

Blog Graphics

I love graphics! I can't get enough of them. I have been puchasing graphics for many years and have quite a collection. Since I used one of my purchased sets for the header and sides on this blog, I want to give due. I purchased these graphics from The Shabby Shoppe. This is a wonderful site with amazing graphics that can be purchased. I love to do hybrid scrapbooking and this is one of my go to places. The digital kits, elements, papers, etc. are fantastic. It is also has wonderful resources to help you set up your own blog. I will talk more about where I purchase graphics and how I use them later. In the mean time, check out the Shabby Shoppe. It will take you hours to manuever through this site and look at everything. Have a great time, I know I always do when I visit them. There is also a link at the side of the page to take you there!
